AMD has confirmed the Ryzen 8000G series still has a ‘strong foothold’ in the market, given the ‘increased demand’ for AI powered desktops. Speaking to PC-Builder.io, Martijn Boonstra, AMD’s Product and Business Development Manager, was discussing the latest Ryzen 9000X3D Series desktop processors, when he was asked about plans for AMD’s current APU line-up.
“The Ryzen 8000G Series Processors with Radeon Graphics continue to have a strong foothold in the market,” he said. “Especially with the increased demand for AI powered desktops.”
The 8000G Series is now a little over a year old and, at launch, featured the world’s first dedicated neural processing unit (NPU) on a desktop PC processor. Targeting PC builders on a budget and built very much with AI in mind, the 8000G leverages the ‘Zen 4’ architecture and boasts up to eight cores, 16 threads, 24MB of total cache and Radeon 700M Series graphics.
When asked about plans for future products in the line-up, Boonstra wasn’t able to shed any light on them… yet. “For the future, unfortunately I cannot comment on unannounced or unreleased products,” he said.
We do know, however, that there will be a trio of Ryzen Z-series APUs targeting the handheld gaming market on the way. At the top of the pack is the Z2 Extreme, which boasts a TDP of up to 35W, eight cores and a 16-thread design. While it was quickly shut down that such an APU was going to be used in the Steam Deck 2, there is hope it makes an appearance in the next-generation of the Lenovo Legion Go or ASUS Rog Ally X.
